Bread of Life

Our church supports those who are in need by cooking dinners and serving dinners through Bread of Life, a ministry of love and compassion which takes place in Malden. We are reminded of Jesus's words: "For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thursty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in . . . " (Matthew 25:25).

Once a month, on the second Wednesday, our church hosts a meal for about 100 people at the St. Paul's Episcopal Parish, 26 Washington St, Malden, MA 02148 (map).  For the most part, our team prepares American Chop Suey on our night, although on hot summer nights we will resort to cold sandwiches to avoid turning on the stove.

Our church historically and for many years did Bread of Life the 3rd Tuesday of the month.  This was headed up during the most recent 26 years by Jesse Frieda (10 years) and Sandy Fay (1 year) and Beverly Schluntz (15 years), and many people from our church helped all those years.  St. Peter's of Malden did it for years on the 2nd Wednesday.  With the unfortunate closing of St. Peter's, our church took over the 2nd Wednesday from St. Peter's in 2007, and another church has taken over the 3rd Tuesday.  Fortunately Bread of Life is getting more and more volunteers every year and at the end of 2011 the Malden Elks volunteered to help our church with the 2nd Wednesday.  So starting in January of 2012 our church has been switching off every other month with the group from the Elks so that now our church volunteers on the even months and the Elks takes the odd months.  This has worked out really well because of the depth it provides in case somebody from either group is sick.
